South Korea removing word ‘Alien’ from registration card

For the first time in 54 years, word ‘Alien’ will be removed from Registration card.

On June 1st, The Ministry of Justice made a public announcement about the revision of current Immigration Act as it will replace ‘Alien’ with more neutral term.

The word ‘Alien’ has been widely criticized as inappropriate term considering more general use of ‘foreigner’ and ‘visitor’ worldwide.

Alien registration card has been issued to all the foreigners who are residing in Korea for identification like social security.

For new registration card, more neutral term such as ‘Foreign National Card’ or ‘Foreign Residence Card’ will be applied.
